A Poem

I can’t believe it’s been nearly 2 months since I’ve posted. I guess I’ve had a lot on my mind that just hasn’t been making it to the page. I am, in fact, working on a proper post now. In the mean time, here’s a poem. It was one of those things that came to me, fully formed, as I was trying to fall asleep. I typically don’t get up and write them down, but this time I did.

In Concert

Watching the floor from above,
like live Doppler radar,
an East coast circle pit –
like tiny hurricanes
of testosterone and youth.

From the catwalk above the floor,
I watch these forces of nature
that could be so easily mistaken as random,
ruleless,
and I see their inner logic.

The brutal ballet,
the Fibonacci sequence beneath it all –
is electrifying and dangerous.
Visceral and beautiful.

The final chorus begins
and amid these vibrating balls of energy,
the kinetic chaos within them emerging
in sweat and tears on young faces,
I see a boy throw his head back in ecstasy
Eyes closed tight.

I imagine the rain of a tempest
pouring down on his rapt face.
He is singing;
He knows every word.

Beneath it, a fervent prayer to the rain gods,
a promise to his future self:

“I will not settle;
I will not sell out.
I contain enough electricity to fuel a nation –
I have raw energy,
raw power.
I will ride the oncoming storm.
I will destroy worlds.
I will never let my thirst be quenched or
my fire be quelled;
my life to be cataloged and quarantined,
stored in a cubicle in a tall building
dying one breath at a time”
